The coronavirus pandemic has created a global crisis for humanity, yet our innate human instincts prevail with daily acts of solidarity, courage and benevolence. We have witnessed front line workers risking their lives, volunteers eager to support the healthcare system and citizens willing to contribute with community acts of kindness.

Here in Monachil, a picturesque village at the foot of Sierra Nevada in Granada, local business owners await financial support from the government, try to develop new strategies to refocus objectives and wonder how to rebuild the post-coronavirus economy.

As a citizen of Monachil, rebooting our local economy is essential and partly in our hands. As managing director of Transition Spain, specialised in event organization, how can I contribute? We need a plan of action in order to:

- Promote local businesses from all sectors and generate the liquidity necessary to keep them afloat
- Motivate citizens and encourage them to visit and purchase from local establishments

Our proposal, yet to be christened with an attractive name, consists of completing an organized route around the local businesses with a specific objective. Participants will be encouraged to partake in different challenges based on games, activities and the purchase of products, services or promotional vouchers. Our team will be at strategic points to motivate contestants to perform fun challenges for extra points. Participants will hand-in their completed challenge forms at a specific point, where they can also donate the products acquired to a local charity. Prizes would include vouchers to be used locally.

Objective:

- Help resume sales after a period of inactivity.
- An opportunity for businesses to promote themselves to a large audience in a short period of time
- Encourage creativity to adapt to new circumstances and customer needs. Each business can propose their own challenge for customers.
- Participate in mass marketing to reach as many potential customers as possible.
- Marketing surveys completed by participants would provide valuable information for businesses.
- Prizes in the format of business vouchers means returning customers.
- Contribution to a local charity event
- Participation in an innovative initiative with great potential

While the global coronavirus pandemic lasts, why not offer a virtual route of local businesses and corresponding challenges? If a particular product is not for you, it could be the best gift for the friend whose birthday you missed, for that neighbour across the street who has stayed at home for so long, for a loved one or that amazingly brave child who deserves it.

Currently, Monachil does not have a digital platform which includes all local businesses. Our first step is to ensure a secure digital infrastructure will offer an increasingly necessary digital presence to many small and medium-sized businesses in the area. With this initiative already in progress, the aim is to help businesses to overcome these moments of economic uncertainty and offer citizens a safe method to purchase locally from the comfort of their homes. Mutual aid and solidarity enhance the identity of a society, allowing it to mature and become stronger in the face of adversity.

Through the power of collaboration, solidarity and enthusiasm, great things happen.
